This article is going to be a bit different than our norm. As RTC approaches 8 years of having a studio location, I’m reflecting a bit on why I started the gym and really who this place is here for.
We openly state that we are here for those in their 30’s to 50’s who want to get into amazing shape.
Well, I suppose in the beginning the reasons are a bit selfish. I was in my early 30’s at the time, and so were all my friends. During this time, none of us felt like we were in our 30’s in fact, we all still mentally felt like we were still in our 20’s.
Changes Started to Happen
We noticed though that things in our workouts started to change.
Injuries seem to happen a bit easier, then all of a sudden, we had talks with our Drs about blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol. That was weird to us.
This just seemed foreign to us at the time because none of us FELT like we should not have to worry about that. I mean, we were still young. Right?
Then my best friend at the time got put on blood pressure meds while he was only 31… in the big scheme of things I know this was nothing but both him and me were religious with our workouts and health so to all of a sudden have a dr put him on blood pressure meds was like a kick in the stomach.
As I did my research on what we needed to do to get him off those meds and to keep me from getting on, I started learning how we needed to make health a priority before workouts.
Diet HAD to be a concern (more so as we get older), cardio HAD to happen, mobility HAD to be addressed, Dr’s visits had to happen, among other things.
When we started addressing our mobility, recovery (this includes food and sleep) and keeping good tabs on our health markers such as blood glucose, blood pressure, hormones, etc.. we both got in even better shape.
Leaner, stronger, more athletic, we even looked younger. We got quite a few jokes from our family and friends that we looked like we were aging backward to our teenage years… yikes!
Side note: Not surprisingly, anytime we have someone go through a lean out process, they ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS look like they age backward, they end up looking YEARS younger.
Not Being Like Everyone Else
Now, around that time, I had also left my previous company, and I started taking on coaching clients, and I naturally gelled more with those in their 30’s+ and used these tactics to help them get lean, get muscle, and overall make them look like rockstars.
People seemed to have this assumption that when you were in your 30’s and especially 40’s+ that you were SUPPOSED to start to feel older. Tired. Beat-up. Achy. Irritable. That those feelings were all normal.
When I firmly believe that feeling old, achy, and overweight isn’t normal. Especially in your 30’s, 40’s and even 50’s
Seriously, you’re not even at the halfway point yet; there is no reason that people should feel and operate that way.
I feel that after talking to many people about this, many just felt that feeling old, crappy, was just part of life. They saw their parents go through this, so naturally, they assumed that this is what they were supposed to go through.
Just because many of our parents got that way doesn’t mean we have to follow the same path.
That thinking lite a fire under me. I didn’t want to accept that my best days were behind me but instead still think that my best days were still yet to come.
Over the years the studio has grown, and we have developed a system or methodology that’s geared exclusively to those in their 30’s-50’s
We focus on teaching these people, our people, our RTC family HOW they need to workout. How THEIR body needs to move (everybody moves differently), how THEIR body needs to eat, what kind of lifestyle THEY need to live, and…
…we hold them to a higher standard than they hold themselves.
Because sometimes you just need someone to lite a fire under your ass, get you moving, and get you out of your head.
Over the years, I have found that most in their 30’s+ feel they are broken when it’s quite far from that. It’s simply their body is a bit different than what they remember, and they are just trying to relearn it.
And that’s what we do, help you relearn your body, what works for you, what doesn’t. We work alongside you, cutting that learning curve down so you can get the results faster without the frustrations of trial and error.
You’re Not Old
Shooting you from the hip here. Your life is just getting started; you’re not even at the halfway point yet. I mean, some of you are just now starting to figure out the life thing.
You’re not old. You’re nowhere near old. Hell, with the way technology is going, I’m seeing people in their 60’s and even 70’s that are still living a fantastic life and just as active as they were in their 20’s.
You don’t have to follow the same path as everyone; you don’t have to look and feel like crap all the time.
Instead, let’s show you HOW it’s done. Someone to teach you, hold you accountable, make sure you’ve got it right, make sure you’ve got the habit, then you can move on with the rest of your life.
The Benefit No One Tells You About.
One of the best things about getting in better shape is what it does to your mindset.
You become more confident. More self-assured. More courageous. Then you use that confidence and courage to change other aspects of your life.
- Getting out of a crappy relationship
- Applying for that job
- Starting that business
- Asking that person out you feel is out of your league
- Discovering your self-worth.
I firmly believe that the 30’s are the new 20’s and the 40’s are the new 30’s
That even in your 50’s you can still eclipse your previous best.
This is why we started RTC.
To help those in their 30’s to 50’s get in the best shape of their lives and use that as inspiration to change other aspects of their lives.
You are not old, and you are not broken, you’re just getting started.
