Why Keto Makes You Bloated: The One Mistake Most People Overlook

Why Keto Makes You Bloated: The One Mistake Most People Overlook

“Every Time I Go Keto, I Feel So Heavy and Bloated…”

If you’ve ever jumped on the keto train and thought, “Why do I feel worse instead of better?”—you’re not alone.

A few years ago, a woman reached out with that exact concern. She was bloated, her stomach felt heavy, her skin looked red and inflamed, and she hadn’t lost a pound in weeks. Sound familiar?

Here’s the full story—and the sneaky thing that was holding her back.

Her Keto Stats

  • Female, late 30s

  • 5’5” and 150 lbs

  • Wanted to lose 15 lbs

  • No hormonal issues

  • Worked out 3-4x/week (BodyPump classes)

  • Took a multivitamin and probiotics

  • Ate “clean” keto

  • Dropped 6-7 lbs in the first 10 days… then stalled

  • Started to feel heavy, sluggish, and bloated in her lower gut

  • Even noticed her skin had a red tint and was more sensitive

Her go-to meals?

Meal 1: Bulletproof coffee (with heavy cream and butter)
Meal 2: Nuts or pork rinds
Meal 3: Salad with chicken thighs and coconut oil
Meal 4: Steak with avocado oil + more salad
Snacks: More nuts, deli meat, or pork rinds

On paper, her eating looked clean.

But something was way off.

So… What Was Going On?

Was it:

  • Too many calories?

  • Not enough calories?

  • Hormones?

  • Not enough cardio?

Nope.

The real culprit? She wasn’t eating enough fiber.

Why Fiber Matters on Keto

When she cut carbs… she cut out all carbs—including the good ones. That meant:

  • No fiber-rich vegetables

  • No fruit

  • No beans

  • No whole grains

She was getting under 5g of fiber per day.

For reference, most people need 25–45g a day, depending on their size and gender.

So what happened?

All those fatty meats, oils, and low-residue foods sat in her gut… and just stayed there. You know that bloated, brick-in-your-gut feeling? That was her.

She mentioned she was pooping every 3–4 days (yikes)… when she normally went daily. And that backup caused her to feel bloated, inflamed, and off.

The Fix: Add Fiber (Even on Keto)

She didn’t want to quit keto yet—so we made one change:

➡️ Added 30g of fiber daily using sugar-free Metamucil.

Why a supplement? Because she didn’t want to add higher-fiber carbs back in yet. So we gave her gut the help it desperately needed.

What Happened Next?

  • Days 1–3: Nothing

  • Day 4–5: 🚽 Things started moving

  • Day 10: Down 7 pounds—yes, SEVEN

  • Her skin tone normalized

  • Her energy came back

  • Bloating disappeared

Even her blood pressure dropped from 150/96 to her normal range after her body stopped fighting all the backed-up junk.

Sometimes it’s not what you’re eating… it’s what you’re not eating.

Real Talk About Keto

Look, I’m not anti-keto.

It works for some people. But like any diet, if your version of it doesn’t work for your body, that doesn’t mean you’re broken. It just means you need to adjust—or try something else entirely.

Here’s what I want you to take away from this story:

➡️ If your diet makes you feel worse, not better, it’s time to change it.
➡️ If you’re bloated on keto, track your fiber.
➡️ If you’re not pooping daily, that’s a red flag.
➡️ Your nutrition should make you feel energized, not inflamed.

Final Tip

If you’re doing keto (or a super low-carb plan), take a few minutes to track your fiber intake for a few days. If you’re consistently under 20g, it’s worth bumping it up with whole foods or a quality supplement.

Because if your gut’s not moving… your fat loss isn’t either.
