Stay on Track While Traveling

Let’s call it what it is: travel and holidays are the two biggest derailers of any fitness or fat loss plan.

Routine? Gone.
Food prep? Out the window.
Suddenly, quick becomes more convenient than healthy—and that’s usually where the spiral begins.

It’s not that you don’t want to eat healthy while traveling—you just don’t know how. That’s where I’ve got your back.

Here’s what we recommend to all our RTC members to make smarter, realistic decisions when life (or vacation) gets in the way.

🍽 Restaurant Rules

Let’s be honest: if you’re traveling, you’re eating out. Whether it’s a pit stop or dinner with family, here’s how to survive a restaurant without sabotaging your plan:

  • Say you’re “allergic” to something if you know you can’t resist it (e.g., bread, sugar, or oils). It’s not technically lying—you are allergic to gaining weight 😉

  • Ask for recommendations based on your “allergy” or goals—let them do the work for you.

  • Dressing on the side for salads. Always.

  • Double veggies instead of fries. Ask for them grilled or roasted.

  • Order apps instead of entrees. Restaurant portions are wild.

  • Burger? Cool. Just lose the bun.

  • Fruit makes a great side.

Pro Tip: Yelp or Google “gluten-free,” “grass-fed,” or “healthy” in your area. Saves time and guesswork.

🚗 On the Road

If you’re driving, you can prep like it’s a regular workday:

  • Pack a small cooler

  • Bring utensils and napkins

  • Stop when hungry, not bored

But hey… sometimes life happens. If it’s a last-minute trip or you’re allergic to cold veggies 😬, here’s what you can grab at almost any gas station or truck stop:

  • Jerky (watch sodium but solid protein source)

  • Individual nut or almond butter packs (like Justin’s)

  • Protein bars (Quest, RXBar, Larabar, etc.)

  • Fresh fruit

  • Hard-boiled eggs (some stops carry them)

Caution: Nuts and trail mix are calorie bombs. If portion control is hard for you, steer clear unless they’re in single-serve packs.

🏨 Hotel Hacks

A hotel doesn’t have to throw off your routine. In fact, with a little planning, you can stay pretty dialed in.

Here’s a quick hotel survival list:

  • Plastic utensils or a travel spork. You’ll thank me when you’re eating oatmeal at 6 AM.

  • Reusable water bottle. Save plastic—and your wallet.

  • Water flavor packets. Because plain water gets boring fast.

  • Probiotics or magnesium. Helps digestion, especially with unfamiliar foods.

  • Gum or mints. Clean out that jerky breath. Trust me.

🔁 Final Thoughts

Preparation is always your best friend when traveling—but perfection? Not required.

Just aim to keep some sense of structure while still enjoying your trip. Use these tools, stay flexible, and you’ll come back feeling great instead of defeated.

Remember: One trip doesn’t ruin your progress. Poor decisions repeated daily do.
